Our name is spelled Seventh-day Adventist (lower case "d").
Our name encompasses two great truths of the Bible:
The meaning of the first part of the name, Seventh-day, is the Sabbath of the Bible established by God at the end of creation (Genesis 2.1-3) of the earth as a perpetual reminder of God as creator and as our Savior. We experience true rest when we enter into a trusting relationship with God by accepting and believing in the life and death of His Son Jesus. God re-creates in the believer the likeness of His Son Jesus. We accept this likeness by faith, by trusting and resting in the Word of God as recorded in the Bible. The Seventh-day symbolizes this salvation through activities that include worship, fellowship, prayer and Bible reading while excluding unnecessary work and activities. The Seventh-day Sabbath belongs to God and is an invitation for us to join God on His day by creating activities that focus our attention on God, His great Sacrifice, His Son Jesus and His great Salvation. The Seventh-day Sabbath strengthens our relationship with God and each other.
The Adventist part of the name is the belief in the Second Advent of Jesus Christ to this earth. We believe that God will return to this earth (Revelation 14:6-12), but no one knows the hour of God's return (Matthew 24:36), so our purpose is to share the Everlasting Gospel and good news with the world (Matthew 24:14) before His return (Matthew 28: 19-20). Adventist are distinct in that we believe the Second Coming will not be secret and all will see Jesus coming in the clouds who are on the earth at that time. The reality will be for those who are not looking for the Second Coming will be surprised as stated in Matthew 24:36-51, does not mean the Second Coming will be a secret rapture, only that people will be preoccupied with their lives unaware and unprepared.
